We recently received an email from a reader who asked if we could provide some tips for those hard fratters who aspire to receive a commission into our military forces after graduation. It is undeniable that the Greek community has historically been well represented by some of the most famous military heroes in our country’s history. Dwight D. Eisenhower (Tau Epsilon Phi), Tommy Franks (Delta Upsilon), and George Patton (Kappa Alpha Order) are just three examples of men who traded in their striped ties for stars on their shoulders after graduation.

Being an officer in the military has many elements that are inherently fratty. Conservative haircuts and uniforms will have international sorostitutes swooning. Also, as a young officer, you will be like many other young executive fratters in that you will immediately have the responsibility of leading other people. Of course, your experience in a fraternity will have honed your leadership skills to go along with the lessons you learned in ROTC.
Honestly, your professors are hesitant to give advice to you military fratters. Your actions speak louder than our words, and we appreciate the contributions that you make for our country. We wish all of you safety and success, and hope that one day you put your names on the roll with the men listed above as former fratdaddies that became national heroes.

I’d just have to say that I agree with the above. I’m an SAE from Louisiana and am a recently graduated Warrant Officer in the Army, currently attending helicopter training in Alabama. It is amazing how many other military fratters that you stumble across even on this base. Take for example my case in WOC school; a new candidate joins our class late and ends up rooming with me. One evening my Johnnie Walker Blue personalized labels were forwarded to me in the mail and I was sharing their grandeur with those around me. Upon viewing a label which mentioned my chapter, my roommate starts yelling out an old SAE drinking song; turns out he’s an older alum from Memphis. We also had some Delta Phi’s (or the other way around?), a few others I can’t quite recall, hell we even had a Farmhouse! My point is; if you are planning to become a military officer, you will find others like yourself in an elite crowd of fellow officers bearing polos and other fine attire when off duty. We drink nice liquor and the pay is not bad at all for a single fratdaddy fresh outta college. You give orders, and play golf around the Officers Club. Need I say more?
Thanks for the great comments, Ryan. It sounds like fratdaddies will be making the USA proud for years to come.
My fratdaddy of the month vote goes to Ryan. Joining the Armed forces is a TFM.
ROTC at my school does not allow hair to be over 2 centimeters. Is it acceptable to add a small amount of hair gel before going out to the bars? There is not much else a military fratter can do with a buzz cut.
BTP:
Just when you think you’ve thought of every situation, new questions like this come up.
Because of the danger of a slippery slope, we cannot endorse or condone the use of hair gel. However, we are sympathetic to your situation. Even though you may feel self-conscious, don’t worry about going out sans product with the buzz cut. Chicks love a guy that has a uniform, and that haircut is part of your uniform. Use it to your advantage.
Don’t forget those of us who didn’t finish school because they were called to join the service immediately. I am a Phi Delt from Mercer University in GA and am now an enlisted marine and damn proud of it. You don’t have to be an officer to frat hard, I still pull it off every weekend. Always remember, you can’t spell “lost” without “Lt.”
To Ryan: As the son of a Col., I thank you for your service to this great country of ours. As a fratdaddy, may Minerva provide you wisdom and the Lion strength! PHI ALPHA
Concur with Jack. I vast majority of the officers I had to work for were Class 1 Douches with few exceptions and there is nothing wrong with putting metal through folks.
