Rollin in the Hay
There’s one thing we can say for Rollin’ in the Hay that we can’t really say for any other band that’s going to appear on this list: there’s a great chance that you may be seeing them at a fratcastle near you in the future (according to their schedule they’re already coming to the Ole Miss KA house in late August, with future band party dates already on tap).
Touted as a bluegrass outfit with some big Southern Rock influences, anyone who’s seen these guys live can tell you that they’re as versatile a band party group as any you could hope to get. They can do the traditional bluegrass, they can do the fratty country, they can do the Skynard-style rock…and it’s always one hell of a party on top of all that.
The iconic status of the remaining bands on the countdown keeps them from creeping higher up the list, but as far as a fun band that’s got some real musical talent, these guys are top notch. If you don’t believe me, check out the fratgasm that is their “Pickin’ On Widespread” album (a bluegrass tribute to a band who we may be talking about a bit more in detail very soon).

This sure is a shocker. I’ve never heard of this band and couldnt find any of their music on itunes
I haven’t seen these guys, but if they’re a cover band you should’ve gone with Trotline. They’re way better and I’m willing to bet more people have heard of them because they tour all over the southeast.
I actually first saw them when they opened for, believe it or not, another band appearing on this countdown.
UTFratty, Trotline would have also been an excellent choice here. We wanted to include one band in the countdown that wasn’t as “mainstream”, simply because we wanted to include a band that can still be seen in fratcastles. Trotline would have also met this criterion.
Maybe include in the next three spots something like a “You might also like” sidenote for the rest of the bands?
One bluegrass/southern rock cover band is simply not the fourth frattiest band. BG/SoRock cover bands IN GENERAL, maybe. But I’m sure every decent fraternity in the south has their go-to cover. These dudes play a hell of a show, no doubt. But there are an abundance of headier, frattier bands who’ve accomplished more than covering songs from which to choose.
Well said cheezonwheat. It should have been a generalization for cover bands……….this count down should be about legends who have made their staple in the fraternity community
I will be both sincerely dissapointed and severely appalled if an 80’s band isn’t on this list
80’s is tough, in my opinion. You have a lot of fratty music coming out of the 80’s by bands that aren’t necessarily fratty bands.
Rollin in the Hay is fantastic on a Friday night in the bandroom, but I feel that they are even better on a Saturday afternoon in the spring. Rollin in the Hay, crawfish or pig roast, Plan As in abundance, ice chests full of frat water, and a bar stocked with numerous top-shelf options. I really can’t picture Heaven being better.
I think this is a interesting pick but if you wanted to pick a upcoming band that plays at fraternities throughout the south Nelo would be a great pick. They came and partied with us after their show even…Trotline would be a good choice like UTFratty said
I agree Nelo would have been a good choice. I don’t really ever remember their shows but what I do remember is good and I always hear great reviews from satisfied soros.
These bands seem pretty fratty, but here in Oklahoma, the truly most badass band parties have rappers.
If you’ve ever been to row week at Arkansas…you know what im talking about.
nothin makes a sorostitute ooze like some kanye west or bone-thugs.
I think that it is acceptable to schedule one or two groups like bone-thugs, 17th Floor, etc. for a home game band party, but don’t make a habit out of it.
Save the rap music for swaps.

I don’t know what trash you’ve been sleeping with.
what the hell is “skynard-style rock”?
doug you fucking big bag of douche
this site, while containing some minimal informationg that might be beneficial to glean, is nothing noteworthy. ever since i first visited i have been getting more and more of an impression that its a faggy shithole.
censor me, bitch. i dont know your background but i guarantee you i wont be impressed.
You said they were going to open at the KA house in Ole Miss? When is that going to be?
The Sig Eps will be getting Drowning Pool this year! Rock out with your cock out!
Yeah broham…Sig Ep=luvs!!!!! Fagginhard=luvs!!!!!!
Click on the schedule link in the article. It has them coming to Oxford on the 29th.
Dear Sirs
We are flattered to be listed in your top bands. At the risk of being brazen the Las Angeles Times called Rollin in the Hay one of the founders of the modern bluegrass movement. We are selective in our versions of other artists songs but I don’t think we would be in the Alabama Music Hall of Fame if we were a cover band. Fraternity brothers have always been a great barometer for good music!
Thanks again!
This band travels extensively and has a huge following nationwide.Their Cd”Pickin’ on Panic’ gave them some national recognition that other bands like Trotline JUST DON’t have! Underground..kinda, but FUN.
I will admit that Hay may not be a regionally known band…but if you see these folks like you will understand the choice. They are a great band…not just a cover band. And the live shows are incredible. Check em out.
