Dave Matthews Band
Find a post-grad fratter old enough, and there’s a chance that they saw DMB play at your fraternity house when they were just starting out. Now one of the most famous jam-bands in the world, and prolific purveyor of stickers for sorostitutes’ cars, this band played many frat castles before they hit the big time.
Good luck getting them into your band room now…unless you pull one of the all time great frat tabbing sessions in history (which would be a TFM), chances are you don’t have the cash in your house’s coffers to snag these boys back to campus. But that’s ok, because (among other sundry “groups”) DMB concerts are often prime gathering spots for fratdaddies and sorostitutes.
Many have said (and your professor agrees) that their offerings as of late are inferior to the fratty staples that are “Under the Table and Dreaming”, “Crash”, and “Before These Crowded Streets”. Nevertheless, many quality DMB tracks still find a home on the fratty MP3 player, and many a Plan A deal has been sealed with a glass of sour mash & “Crush” playing softly over the Frathoe speakers.

I dont know.. DMB has gotten fairly GDI. When I’ve been to those concerts its full of smelly hippies who don’t deserve to breathe the same air I do… I’ll leave DMB for the guys with guitars to play in coffee houses
haha, this pick is sort of iffy recently. a staple of frat in the past, DMB has recently become contested by the GDI world. while concerts are still frequented in large numbers by the fraternity community, many GDIs listen to DMB non stop. dave started in charlottesville, where UVA is located, one of the few fratty ACC schools.
I got a kick out of the final sentence… sealing the deal with “Crush”… ive heard it done
I agree with this pick. Not my favorite band but fairly fratty.
as an old school brother, i like this choice, wish it was higher even. nothing seals the deal like crush blaring in the background
DMB is just classic frat music. Yeah they have a lot of GDI fans but dont all bands. Frat stars have been jamming to DMB for years.
Every big time concert is full of smelly hippies, not just DMB’s. Hippies are simply drawn to concerts, you can’t blame the band for that.
I’m glad to see DMB on the list, they deserve to be.
I second that comment, I wouldn’t be caught dead at a DMB concert
DMB’s utter douching (extreme liberal agenda) as of late should automatically make them black balled from this list. Shit, 311 used to play at fraternities across the midwest, does that mean they should be on the list?? Just because someone played in a frat castle doesn’t make them fratty (see Afroman)
DMB making this list has made me wonder about the professor’s political affiliation (let’s face it, to be frat, one must practice the fine art of Reaganism) and if what’s in Doug’s bong is legal.
Don’t worry about my political affiliation. I am a card carrying Fratocrat, which means that I analyze picks such as DMB without consideration of who they favor at the ballot box.
I challenge anyone to dispute the following facts:
1) DMB was a force in fratty music from the mid to late 90’s.
2) They continue to be commonly found in many fratdaddies’ mp3 player or burned CD collection.
3) Sorostitutes love to plaster the back of their 325i with those DMB dancing whatever stickers (http://www.purplemoon.com/Stickers/dmb-dance.gif)
As a grizzled and battle hardened fratdaddy, I gave up letting political affiliations govern my entertainment choices long ago. Tim Robbins’s political agenda is about as close to my own as Rosie O’Donnell’s toothbrush is to my sink, but I still love me some Shawshank Redemption. The sad truth is that most of Hollywood lives in a la-la land of tree hugging and whale saving, while we in Fratsvegas would favor shooting California Condor out of the sky if they tasted good in a fine habanero wing sauce. Such is the way of the world.
I offer this defense of the choice because, obviously, if I didn’t believe they should be on the list they wouldn’t be there. However, we still welcome all opinions on the matter, even if we must agree to disagree. I’m sure they’ll be some disagreements on the final 4 choices as well, but that’s what makes the fratmosphere we inhabit a much more diverse arena than the douchebags that hate us give us credit for.
5 is a good place for DMB…they are fratty, but at the same time there are others that rank higher (ie. clapton, rod stewart, bowie, etc.)
i recently saw DMB in Atlanta and i have to say it was covered with GDIs but this shouldnt make Dave a GDI band, he has put too much into the greek community to be cast away so quicly
I understand your stance on political affiliation. But to be a fratty band, should the band members themselves be at least a little fratty?
I gotta admit that I’m disappointed with DMB as your choice. Yes, they were very fratty in the 90’s, but they have not been able to stand the test of time. Once they got a little money, they showed us just how GDI they could be. Fratdaddies have DMB in their ipods, but mostly because we had those CD’s in the 90’s, so when we got our ipods, we just put them on there to have all our music in one place. Look through anyone’s ipod and you will find some questionable music. I don’t think that we should let the sorostitutes take the musical lead, either. Sorostitutes are notorious for liking music that many fratdaddies despise, but have to tolerate sometimes.
True fratty music is much more masculine and doesn’t have so many love songs. DMB is a soft jammy band, like the bubble gum jam band OAR. The list needs Widespread, Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green, Hank, etc.
Very well put, Doug. If we let our political views govern who we listened to, and what movies we saw we’d have… I dunno. David Allen Coe sort of comes to mind.
While Dave Matthews is a liberal douche and I’d love to do Joker’s pencil trick on him, his earlier music is definitely solid.
I saw DMB live and Dave punished a fifth of Jack by the end of the concert. To all those who complain about hippies and GDI’s at DMB concerts either:
1) Have never been to a concert
2) Are a GDI themselves trying to be cool
Dave Mathews is indeed fratty ……period and his music will remain in the fratty community for years to come…..something that corey smith and OAR could only dream of.
Although it seems we all are agreeing that Dave’s recent music has been markedly less fratty, his lifetime contributions to the music fratmosphere cannot, and should not, go overlooked. Doug does well to emphasize the obvious distinction that true fratdaddies are in it for the long-term, as GDI’s are more short-term players. Aside from those contributions, the man’s a straight alcoholic and has laced through copious amounts of fratdrugs during his life. His frattitude is thus respected.
sorry, from an old school post grad fratter, ill have to say that DMB is the quintessential Fratband….and like a previous poster said, you can go to any concert and see douche bags….just more at a My Chemical Romance show than a Robert Earl Keen show….as for the hippies, someone mentioned Panic shows, more hippies there than Dave shows!..Dave at 5 is low, but ill take it as i think the frattiest bands may have to Include Jummy Buffett at 1 or 2
as for band party music..17th floor, US and Trotline own the music scene
Something to consider. Most things that we find, subsequently deem fratty, and enjoy is later embraced by so many GDIs that it just loses it’s luster. DMB is a shining example. Their earlier music is a frat staple that no fratdaddy should be without. Their later shit is about as GDI as a scion. But the later shit is what GDIs swallow up. Let them have it. We know, and celebrate, the diffence.
“eat, drink and be merry,” fellas. solid choice at five.
Dave is definitely one of the first bands I thought of when I saw this poll. Hootie, Benjy Davis, and Old Crow Medicine Show should definitely be on here. Maybe even Cross Canadian Ragweed and Garth Brooks
As long as WSP makes it on I’ll keep reading this website…
Yeah, Widespread and Jimmy Buffett need to be on here.
Buffett won’t be on the list…see the note I posted earlier today.
I think we can all say that at some point everyone enjoyed listening to DMB. But the truth is, they sold out, becoming a universally popular. This is why I’m upset with the pick. Listening to Dave does not distinguish a fratter as cooler than others. They lack that uniqueness now (and for the past decade). Should be about 14th on the list.
Sig Eps love DMB!!!
DMB fucking sucks why the hell are they even on the fratty band countdown.. I’m very dissapointed in this site at the moment.
