Sometimes, a fratty good time means just you, a couple of pledge brothers, and some sorostitutes kicking back on the fratio with a cooler and a grill. Other times, it means 65 freshmen sorostitutes wearing togas with a a liquored up fraternity pledge class waiting on them. We speak of course, of one of the most commonly held parties in the fratmosphere: the swap/mixer.
The premise behind this party is simple: the fraternity, sometimes in conjunction with the sorority, will choose a theme. The pledge classes from each respective house will dress up according to that theme. On the night of the party, members of each pledge class are “introduced” to their dates, and the party begins. Often, these themes need no choosing, but rather are long standing traditions between certain fraternities and sororities.
Pledges are often at a loss when they try to decide what to wear. Therefore, we, as caring actives, need to help them along with choosing an effective costume. In our study of pledges, we have found this fact to be tried and true: pledges LOVE to be clothed in the most embarrassing costume you can think of. If they don’t think they can pull off the assigned costume using items from their own closets, send them to the local thrift store, which can often be a valuable source of swap night clothing.
Traditionally, swaps/mixers occur on weeknights. During football season, they are a key part of the party schedule leading to gameday. If the swap/mixer is held on Thursday, it can be a great and relaxing way to kick off the game weekend for those fratdaddies who made sure that they would be free of Friday classes.
The first step to a successful swap/mixer is the effective pre-party. This is the time when pledges can often interact most with actives in an environment like they will enjoy once they are initiated. Needless to say, many fratdaddies and sorostitutes find this to be a prime opportunity for the consumption of many fine fratwaters.
Once the pledges have been paired off, the active fratdaddy’s night presents several key fratting hard opportunities. For one, sorostitute pledge classes are often much larger than their fraternity equivalents. At the same time, there is nothing that a freshman sorostitute loves better than an older fratdaddy. Don’t be afraid to go and talk to a costumed young lady that catches your eye. This can also be an opportunity to mingle with the actives in the sorority in an environment other than the normal band party or bar. A normal night’s plan A may be a plan B or C on this evening.
In the early hours of the morning, when the swap/mixer starts dying down, you should consider taking the party to the bar or to a house. Even better, think about taking it to a bar, and then back to a house. You will often come out of the evening with a great gameday date, future shacking opportunity, or wife. We know numerous post-grad fratdaddies who met their eventual sorostitute of choice at just such a function.
The swap/mixer is the first cog in the wheel that gets optimum fratitude rolling all the way through the game weekend. A successful swap/mixer gives your entire house the chance to make every weekend fratmosphere better than the last. The best thing is that this isn’t a hard thing to do; it’s difficult not to frat hard when you have a house full of freshmen sorostitutes dressed like Catholic schoolgirls.

So, favorite themes gentlemen? I know I’ve always had a great time at this little islands one we do. Fratwater + swim-suit theme = fratastic.
an anything but clothes mixer is a fratastic idea. By the end of the evening the fratdaddies and sorostitutes are usually completely nude and conceiving little fratlings upstairs in the frat castle…
Golf Pros/Tennis Hoes always works out fairly well
Every Pike chapter plays the golf pros theme out of submission, don’t be afraid to try something like gi joes and barbie hoes.. gets the girls down and dirty.
A favorite of my KA chapter is the Dukes of Hazzard social with a Daisy Duke look a like contest. Absolutely wonderful.
As for the anything but clothes, we had a interesting go at that with some of the brothers plastic wrapping plates and cups around the junk. Got funnier as the night went on.
My favorite is The Stepford Wives in the spring. Nothing like a sorostitute in a big hat. Secs and Execs is a nice glimpse into the future as well.
Pike here throwa a white trash bash, it’s a good time. ATO does togas, and we (KA) usually do bikini tops and flip flops. All are solid themes.
“Who rides the bus” was a great swap/theme party.
…if you know then you know.
Many of you fellow veteran(and post-grad) fratdaddies know what a resource it is to have a loyal team of sorostitutes on hand. I know my select squad has always been more than willing to lend a hand in applying ridiculous make-up to the well-deserving group of pledges. giving the costume that extra edge. just a thought for you younger fratdaddies as you grow to be top-grade pledgemasters
This is a bit off subject. But I just got back from my last trip of the summer before school starts back up. I was in New York City and noticed someone that had all the signs of a post-grad fratter - conservative baseball hat, polo shirt, fratagonia shorts, and something I hadn’t seen before….they had on a pair of clarke’s wallabees that appeared to be extremely worn out, but very frattastic. Are these approved by the professors? I’m actually thinking of buying some. They seem like an old-fashioned shoe, but I couldn’t help but notice how fratty they were.
yes wallabees are about as fratty garb as you can own. you are obviously a northerner and are limited in frat-knowledge
I have never heard or seen a mixer/swap done this way in 4 years of college. I wish it were that simple at OSU, but the female social chairs are absolute feminazis as they are told by the nationals not to put their name on a wet function.
The way it is done at OSU is as follows:
1.Sorority is invited over for a quick (less than an hour) non-alcoholic function. Something like a barbecue. The fratwater flows lightly at this point, as the university stops by if the function is registered. We make sure the girls know that there will be a party at the house later that night and the theme is _____.
2. We have a few of the girls help pick out outfits for the guys. This is prime hazing time. The girls love to help.
3. Girls get ready and then show up at 10pm or so. by then we usually have the house half-full of random girls, so the ratio gets really good.
so i keep hearing about being from the south and accusation of people being northerners. i’m assuming that means new york, new jersey etc. can someone explain where the distinction falls?
If your state wasn’t red in the Civil War, you’re not in the south. Florida is an exception since depends and rascal scooters are not fratty.
Sooner Pros/Referee Hoes was the theme for the week after the Oregon game.
UTMKA-
follow up, “northerners” refers to new york, jersey, massachussetts? mainly the northeastern states?
New Englad has it’s fratty areas. Connecticut was pretty fratty when I visited a cousin there.
Yankees don’t Frat hard bottom line. Never heard of Wallabees are you kinding me. Wallabees are great for undergrads fratter not so much for a post-grad.
I’ve never been to new york or anything in new england, nor do i plan to. however, wisconsin as a northern state is excessively fratty. Clearly being the fratwater capital of the nation is a true testiment of fratitude.
So, it’s the good old ‘North vs South’ debate again? My Fraternity won’t even think about pledging someone from the north, unless you’re a legacy.
As far as the wallabees are concerned, they are a very oldschool Fraternity style mostly in SEC country.
This is coming from someone who attended a New England Boarding School (Connecticut) but now frats in the South. There is NOTHING frat about the North, once you cross the Potomic you can tell. That said, there are still good people in yankee-dom, especially CT. They usually went to prep school and continued to an Ivy or NESCAC school. The best way to see if someone is legit is to see where they summer. Nantucket, the Vineyard, Hamptons, and Maine are all legit answers.
As a Northerner, I would like to weigh in here. Yes, the South (SEC specifically) frats very hard. I have many friends who go to Georgia and Sewannee. Good shit. But I think the North gets more shit on this site than it deserves. Yes, there are shitty parts (ie New Jersey). But I assure you, we frat hard in New York and Connecticut. Most of us went to private boarding schools. Towns like Greenwich, CT and Bedford, NY frat hard. NESCAC colleges frat hard. You guys down south may be the kings, but we aren’t completely clueless.
http://www.baysideprep.com/index.html from the north….NF
There is a big difference between “partying hard” and “fratting hard.” NESCAC schools may party, but they do not frat. Know the difference
Roll Damn Tide
sorry juan pablo, Texas is NOT the South. It’s the southwest. Huge difference. You should have stayed in Connecticut
Texas seceded and was a part of the Confederacy. Therefore Texas is in the South. You need to go back to American History.
When I think of NJ or NY, I think about all the clowns resembling “Growin’ up Gotti’”, with their gay-ass gel heads & bling, popped collars & rims. In my opinion, you step one mile north of Lexington KY & you are a northerner. Southern KY & NKY hate one another.
Texas was its own Republic before the US begged them to join. We sided with the Confederacy due to not having any other choice.
Texas History- 7th grade
Virtually everything that we call fratting hard is done in the north among the right people. Casually worn American-trad (or “preppy”) clothes, boating, golfing, off shore fishing, fine dogs and guns, outdoor sports, country and city clubs, old families and legacies, girls in pearls, cocktail parties, formals, cotillions, ski lodges, clam bakes and oyster roasts, summering, tailgating, etc. In fact I would argue that just as with frats and the clothing that this started in the north. I could go on for days on this topic. I went to a Southern prep and northern prep school. (My Southern pride won’t let me say which was frattier.) True that some of the girls may be less attractive and more studious. And maybe up north they have a greater volume of douchebags (guidos instead of rednecks) and other hazards unknown in the South. It maybe true also that fratting in the north is fading and under attack. But to say that it isn’t there or never has been is crazy. In fact some seem to be the “just learning types”: a veneer of familiarity with a few preppy brand names and a dash of wannabe. And those guys are so much farther from fratty than our northern counterparts are.
