I would say go for it, if you think you can consistently rush guys that are "of the same mindset." Though don't try to change everything at once cause you might get some opposition from current actives, just do it steady and determined.

I go to a school where greek life pretty much sucks we have i think less than a half dozen active fraternities, I would have gone elsewhere if not for athletics. However a bunch of guys from my team and some friends from freshman year decided to start our own fraternity with the hope of all staying together and being able to throw parties without associating with the scum (big baggy jeans, huge hooded sweatshirts, flat brimmed hats you get the idea) that currently make up our schools greek system. Anyway the school shot us down msot because of all the dumb shit the greeks on campus had been doing (date rape drugs, fighting with eachother) even though the national from that fraternity was fully behind us. Anyway some time after we were offered a group bid by one of the worst fraternities in my opinion on campus. Would anyone advise accepting this bid and trying to turn that place around or just keep partying with the dudes who are more legit than anyone greek on campus anyway. Also let me add that much of my family including my dad and brothers are greek and constantly hassle me because im not.

Another classic is the Tequila Sunrise: give every 2 pledges a handle of tequila and a 12 pack of Krispy Kreme donuts sometime in the evening/night, and put the entire pledge class on the roof. All of it has to be finished before sunrise is over. Also for perhaps hell week, give each pledge a handle of the worst grain liquor available, like McCormick’s, which has to be finished before a certain date. All shots, no cocktails.

I’ve also heard what a certain fraternity here at UGA does for initiation–don’t know if it’s true or not since I don’t know anyone in that particular house. Night of initiation, they put a pledge in each room in their house alone, so that they can communicate to or see each other. Before they go in, they show the pledges a goat and tell them that in order to get initiated, one of them has to come out and screw the goat. I dunno if they actually make someone do it (I doubt it) or if they just jump on the first person to come out of the room.

We had a "thug mixer" last year. Gold chains, strait billed hats, and jerseys...it was pretty funny walking around dressed like that downtown later that night.

SEXY!!!! Personally, I secretly condone the use of Hazing for team building, and the military still uses it today in a limited extent. I don't know if screwing a goat is team building, but, hey: don't knock it 'til you rock it. I'd rather make 'em go hoggin' or do sleep deprivation/physical labor routine.

Fraternity hazing was installed (for the most part) when Civil War veterans would return to college. They had found that the hardships of war brought their men together and formed a bond that could not be formed elsewhere. They began hazing rituals for new members that were to resemble the hardships of war. Most fraternities, especially those in the deep South, still use those same exact hazing rituals.

All our houses have our petty quarrels. They tend to go 'round in circles. I know I've been to a few houses of our on other campuses and no two are alike and some even tried to start fights with visiting brothers. Just depends. Either way, RUSH! Healthy competition is good, and every house will say why they're the best. Just find somewhere you belong, and stick to it. Don't take shit off anyone that you don't deserve, keep your trap shut unless you know what you're talking about, don't fuck with brothers in their house, and don't start shit you can't finish. Pledgeship is a probationary period that is a 2 way street: to see if the brothers like you and want you around AND to see if you like the brothers, their values, and the house. If you don't like it, there's no dishonor in saying thanks, but no thanks, and moving on to a place where you feel welcomed and challenged.

Gimp, go through rush. Just know that if the hazing is something you cannot do, your pledge brothers might get pissed off. Jonathan is right that they will find stuff for you to do. I would suggest wall sits with one leg.

gimpy, I would say still go through it. yes hazing is what makes you who you will become, but a good fraternity will not lose an upstanding guy because he cant walk.. never fear im sure that if you are lucky enough to receive a bid into a fraternity they will think of ways to make sure you still prove yourself.

hey guys, on the topic of pledging/ hazing i got a sad question to ask. i am leaving to go to South Carolina and was all excited to rush and join a fraternity right away. the problem is that i broke my heel and will be on crutches for the first month of school and probably be still a little bit crippled for awhile. i was just hoping some experienced guys would give me a heads up if it is even worth rushing because i would guess nobody wants a crippled pledge. any advice or opinions would help. thanks guys

Making pledges box each other, hilarious. Throwing beer cans at them with a metal pot on their head, also funny. But two years ago the Pikes at our school went a bit too far. They tied the pledges hands behind their backs and threw them in the pool. When they tried to climb out they threw golf balls at them. Seems like an easy way to get somebody killed and have a charter pulled pretty quickly.
